Getting Sideways with Damon Iwanaga and Outdoor Research at Crankworx Whistler
As a brand long since trusted by outdoor enthusiasts, Outdoor Research has recently announced its entrance to the mountain bike industry where its technical expertise will support an international group of riders. One of whom being Damon Iwanaga, who will be getting sideways this year at Crankworx Whistler during the Official Whip-Off World Championships presented by POC. The Outdoor Research athlete claimed to be “absolutely stoked” on the company’s decision to invite the mountain bike world to put its products to the test come Spring 2024.
“Introducing product into an already built world of mountain biking is definitely no easy task for anyone. I have major confidence in OR making a stamp because their gear actually holds up and is truly effective in the harsh conditions we deal with. It’s easy to have gear that satisfies you on the perfect weather day and no crashes but it is really proven a good product when that isn’t the case. You can trust the gear to be breathable and moisture wicking on a hot day and keep you dry and warm on a wet day. That will be the big game changer. Along with the gear just looking great, being super comfortable and fitting, people can buy a product with confidence.”
Having last been to Crankworx Whistler in 2018, Iwanaga is ready to be back in action at the Ultimate Experience in Mountain Biking: “Crankworx Whistler is one of the best events in the mountain biking world. The last time I was there was in 2018, so it has been a while since I last got to enjoy it. I am very excited to come back to say the least. I have only been able to come in 2017 and 2018 for short periods of time to compete in the Whip-Off competition, so I am really looking forward to just getting to hang out and ride for the whole event this year.”
On his training regimen for the Official Whip-Off World Championships presented by POC, he continued: “I wouldnt say I have any training regiment leading up to whip-off. I have had a big handful of injuries since 2019 so just being able to stay on my bike and being comfortable again is my biggest thing. Being in tune with yourself and your bike is just the most important part so if we can go ride and just have fun, hopefully those whips should come around!”
The Outdoor Research athlete also had a few predictions on who might be getting the most sideways this year: “The kids nowadays are throwing masssive whips. A lot of different styles as well which is cool to see. The best part of doing a whip is that not every whip is the same. It’s a chance to show your style and creativity on a bike. My predictions, depending on who is there, Kaos and Kade will be throwing down. As we have all seen them get their bike backwards, they are two of my favorites to watch. Allen Cooke has gotten a couple W’s out there too so I am sure we will see him tossing some big ones as well. Everyone in finals is a blast to watch so I doubt there will be any let down from anyone out there. Its amazing and mind blowing to watch everyone.”
We can confirm that Kaos Seagrave, Kade Edwards, and Allan Cooke will be throwing down at the Official Whip-Off World Championships presented by POC. So will Damon of course. Get the full preliminary rider list here.
